Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Saturday 22.01.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Wet avalanches are likely late afternoon and towards the evening. Warm weather from SW is the move. We are calling for 2-Moderate for Saturday until the warm front hits. Use caution on recently loaded slopes.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Friday 21. January 2022

Her er forholdene generelt stabile.

Mountain weather

Friday 21. January 2022

2-5 mm precipitation. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l during the evening. Fresh breeze from north, changing to moderate gale from the south during the evening. -9 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Saturday 22. January 2022

12 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to gale from the southwest during the evening. -3 °C to 4 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
